Table tennis had a World Championships in 1926 but did not enter the Olympics until 1988 — a gap of 62 years. This is the road to Olympic inclusion, the spread of China's 37 golds, and the four rewrites of the event programme, including the move to six golds at Los Angeles 2028.
At the 1936 World Championships, a single rally ran 2 hours 12 minutes and more than 12,000 strokes, and the umpire asked to be replaced after injuring his neck from turning it so often. The absurd match produced the time limit and the expedite system still in force today.
