Truls Möregårdh: The Hexagonal Blade, Twice a World-Level Finalist and European Grand Smash Champion
2024 Paris Olympic men's singles silver medalist, 2021 World Championships men's singles runner-up, 2025 European Grand Smash champion.
Where He Fits
With that famous hexagonal blade in hand, he has played the most imaginative table tennis Sweden has produced since Waldner.
Playing Style
- Superb feel and in-match improvisation, regularly producing unconventional shot solutions
- Highly varied serves and receives, with rhythms opponents struggle to predict
- Intense emotional expression on court — a competitive temperament that echoes his famous predecessor
Career and Key Moments
At the 2021 World Championships in Houston he fought his way to the men’s singles final, falling to Fan Zhendong to take silver — and announced himself to the world. At the 2024 Paris Olympics he won men’s singles silver (losing the final to Fan Zhendong) and helped Sweden take men’s team silver. In 2025 he won the men’s singles title at the European Grand Smash on home soil, becoming the first European to win a WTT Grand Smash, and added a WTT Champions title the same year; in 2026 he topped the Macao Champions podium. Swedish table tennis hopes he is the heir to Waldner’s mantle.
What He Left Behind
Together with the Lebrun brothers and Sora Matsushima, he forms the most genuine rival group the Chinese men’s team faces in the Los Angeles cycle. From the Waldner era to his, Sweden has finally reclaimed its place in world-level finals.
Remember this: Sweden waited twenty years for another man capable of reaching an Olympic final.
