The one-line verdict

If you can already loop with a committed “hold then release” stroke and want a non-tacky rubber that gives you spin and speed without making you choose, Dignics 05 is a strong flagship pick in Butterfly’s range — the trade-off is that it is unforgiving of lazy swings.

Specifications (official)

  • Tech: Spring Sponge X + high-tension non-tacky topsheet (pimples code No.05)
  • Butterfly indices: Speed 86 / Spin 85 / Arc 88, sponge hardness 40°
  • Thickness: 1.9 mm, 2.1 mm; colors red/black
  • Made in Japan; Butterfly states ~22% more arc and 3.4% more overall power than Tenergy 05, with longer dwell time

Hands-on testing

The non-tacky sheet grips through tension and “holds” the ball at contact before releasing — dwell is a touch longer than Tenergy 05, which is exactly why trained players can brush it so violently. The sponge is firmer and refuses to do the work for you: give it a half-hearted tap and you get a hard, unrewarding board.

It is durable. The topsheet is abrasion-reinforced, so under similar play D05 typically stays playable longer than Tenergy. Butterfly also explicitly advises against boosting — oil softens the Spring Sponge X that gives the sheet its firmness, and the gain is neither needed nor lasting.

Choosing among siblings

  • Want clean, full-contact spin that is firmer and more direct than Tenergy? D05.
  • Want extra bite on serve, short push, and slightly late contact? The semi-tacky D09c.
  • Want an easier-to-learn tension sheet? Tenergy 05.

They are not better or worse — they ask for different strokes. For blades, outer ALC (Viscaria, Fan Zhendong ALC) or inner ALC (Harimoto ALC) all suit it; Harimoto uses it on forehand, Boll on backhand.

Buying advice

Prioritize it if your budget is around ¥500+ and you already have a stable power base; players still finding their feel on entry sponges should learn the stroke on Tenergy or Rozena first — D05 will not cover technical gaps.
